EVS in Ādaži (Latvia)

Creativity in Education – Adazi Free Waldorf School

Project description

The Ādaži Free Waldorf School (www.abvs.lv) is over 20 years old, and has been providing Waldorf education to over 350 students every year, from kindergarten through 12th grade. We invite two volunteers every academic year, to support the activities in the kindergarten and in the secondary school. Waldorf education, also known as Steiner education, is based on the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. Its pedagogy emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils. EVS volunteers in our school support the learning and creative process by becoming involved in all aspects of education. Volunteers will be in the classroom and on excursions, they will help with art and with teaching their native language and culture, and they will support school activities. Volunteers who are interested in hands-on experience at a very creative school will enjoy this project!

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

EVS volunteers are provided with housing near the school. There is a shared flat for the two volunteers, with separate bedrooms and all the necessary furnishings. Lunch is at school every day, and volunteers have funds provided for meals outside of school (pocket money). Previous volunteers have said that the accommodations are suitable and the living standard is good. The hosting organization provides transportation (usually flights) to and from the volunteers home city. Public transportation is not needed in Ādaži – the village is small and can be easily managed on foot or with a bicycle.

Training during the project

Pre-departure training is provided by the sending organization. Volunteers will be connected to our network of previous EVS volunteers. You’ll meet your mentor as soon as you arrive, and will have specific orientation sessions and weekly meetings as you begin service. You’ll go with your mentor to on-arrival training and will also have a mid-service training. While at ABVS, you can have Latvian language training for several hours every week. You will be paired with a specific teacher to support your daily work. You can also meet with teachers at the school to learn about specific topics.
